Get US Local Phone Number FREE Anywhere in the World

By on December 9, 2012

This tutorial describes how you may easily get your own US local phone number from anywhere in the world including UKRAINE without spending a penny.

Once you have a US local phone number, your friends and relatives in the US will be able to call you from their landlines or regular cell phones without paying international rates. Friends and relatives in other countries might also prefer to call your US local phone number if it is cheaper for them. This is also good for startup companies and businesses as they can attract more US customers or clients. The calls can be forwarded to your mobile phone or desktop based VoIP softphones.

Skype offers a service called Skype-In (also known as Online Number) where you can get a local phone number for USA but it costs around $18 for 3 months or $60 for a whole year but I am pretty sure the reason why you landed on this page is because you want to get a US phone number free. So just follow the steps as I try to be as non-technical as possible and you can be sure to get your free US phone number. Every time you receive a call on your new US phone number, just make sure you send your friends and family to foreignUkraine24. 🙂

Getting your own USA Phone Number – Step by Step
Step 1: Sign-up for a free account with and click “getsipaddress” after all fields are field. If your registration was successful, Getonsip will send you a mail with all you need for step 2.

Just for the knowledge, what you registered for was a SIP address. SIP is a signaling protocol, widely used for controlling multimedia communication session such as voice and video calls over Internet Protocol. You can use your SIP address alone to receive calls that are SIP based but this is not our goal so I won’t explain all of that. Our target is – when people call your US phone number, you get the call – so let’s stick to that.

Step 2: When you check the mail from, take note of your SIP address. All other information provided in this mail is going to be needed in Step 5, so do not close the mail yet. In my screen shot provided below, my SIP address is I like to call the sip address the chip in our SIM card. Never mind. Move on to step 3.

Step 3: Open a new browser tab and go to

a) Select any area code you want. These numbers represent some particular area phone codes. So you could search them up on Google and choose which ever you prefer. For this example, “360” was selected for this tutorial which is the telephone code for Western Washington.

b) Input your SIP address in the SIP URI field as shown in the example below.

c) Fill up all other fields accurately and click submit. Note that the password is just any password you want to use for your account. It does not have to relate with the one you used to create your SIP address account at; However, I recommend using the same password so you won’t have to bother about keeping up with too many passwords.

d) If it was successful, you will get a mail with your phone number. In my case, my new US
phone number is “+1360-227-6626”.Congratulations if you got yours. 🙂

We have not finished though. You just have a SIM card, but not a phone for it. Now the idea is since you do not have a physical SIM card, you need a non-physical phone to receive your calls. Now let’s create our phone.

Step 4: Download and Install Jitsi. The function of Jitsi is to allow us receive the calls that are made to our new US phone number. It can be downloaded from: I recommend you download from the “Jitsi 1.0 stable build line” section. I use a Windows operating system 64 bit, so I will click on “Microsoft Windows installers” to download the windows installer. If you do now know if you use 32 bit or 64 bit, I just recommend you download 32 bit or place a comment below and I could do a follow up on how to know that. For other operating system, download your version of the software and of course, install the software just like any other software.

Note: while installing, use all default settings.

Step 5: After installation, open the software.

I have personally not tested this software on the MAC OS or Linux but I think the steps will be similar with the Windows OS, so just follow on.

a) Select “File” from the top menu and select “Add new account” from its submenu.
File -> Add new account.

b) Select ‘Sip’ as ‘Network’ and click on Advanced.

c) Under the Account tab, enter the following information:

— SIP id > your SIP address (you can get yours from the email you got from In my case, it is “”)

— Password > your SIP password (you can get yours from the email you got from In my case, it is “uNGnFUMYFTQxeQkV”)

— Display Name > you can use whatever you like here

d) Under the Connection tab, enter the following information:

— Registrar >;

— Port > 5060

— Authorization Name > Your Authentication Username. (you can get yours from the email you got from In my case, it is “getonsip_foreignukraine24”)

— Configure proxy Automatically > ensure this is NOT SELECTED

Proxy >

— Port > 5060

— Preferred transport > UDP

Keep alive method > Register

Keep alive interval > 25

DTMF method > Auto

Message Waiting (MWI) > Leave checked

Voicemail URI > Leave empty

Select Next and then “Sign In”.

You will now be able to make and receive calls through using your SIP account. Try to call your new US phone number and it has to definitely ring on your computer. 🙂

Step 6:

This is something I recommend but you could choose not to do this. If you have a phone, you want it to be on always so that people can reach you any time. By default, you have to start the software manually but you can change this to start automatically when you switch on or restart your computer. This way,  you are sure you won’t miss any calls as far as your computer is switched on.

To do this:

— Select “Tools” from the top menu, click on “options”.

Tools -> Options.

— Click on the “General” tab

— Under “Startup” section, Make sure the “Auto-start Jitsi when computer restarts or reboots” option is SELECTED. Your option automatically gets saved.

OPTIONAL FOR MOBILE PHONES: Getonsip offers some links for mobile phone configuration which means that you can have your US phone number ring directly on your mobile phone provided you have internet. (Scroll below the site and you will see the links). If anyone is interested in a tutorial from ForeignUkraine24 about how to go about this configuration, leave a request comment below, and I will gladly do a follow up on Nokia, android and iPhone installation and configuration.
