Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that Kyiv welcomes the decision to hold the EU-Ukraine Summit in early 2013.

“It’s a long-expected step of the European Union and the European Commission. Of course we welcome it,” he told journalists in Bangalore on Wednesday.

The date of the EU-Ukraine Summit has been also decided by both presidents involved – Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. The event is scheduled for February 25, 2013 in Brussels.

The announcement was made two days after Yanukovich pulled out of gas price talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the last minute.

According to the Ukrainian president’s press service, Yanukovych and Barroso concluded on the date during a phone conversation which was initiated by the European Commission president.

Ukrainian new media quoted experts who believed that Yanukovich’s own visit to Moscow for discussions on Customs Union would be postponed until after the EU-Ukraine summit in February.

The leadership of the country has stated numerous times that Ukraine will not turn away from European integration according to KyivPost.

The practical steps are already being considered as the president noted that the Ukrainian side should work on preparations necessary for the EU-Ukraine Summit which is expected to stimulate integration with the European Union.
